Description

Native warm season grasses are an underutilized resource in our urban and suburban areas- they are often forgotten, or considered "unkempt" compared to the lifeless carpet of turfgrass.

Learn the basics of grass anatomy and identification, as well as common native warm season grasses (WSG) of the coastal plain. We will compare and identify them alongside invasive, non-native grasses that encroach upon our natural spaces. The class will begin with a 2-hour lecture at the Oxford Community Center, followed by a 1-hour field walk at the Oxford Conservation Center.

Suggested for those with prior background in plant identification and some familiarity with botanical nomenclature. We will cover 5 common native and 3 invasive non-native grass species.

*No books required, but Field Guide to Grasses of the Mid-Atlantic will be referenced and would be useful to have.
